If you think slathering oils on your face will cause more harm than good, keep on reading. Best partnered with a good moisturizer that will sink deeper into your skin and provide more intense hydration, face oils are meant to sit on the top layer of the skin and act as a sealant to lock in moisture. While it might sound counterproductive if you already have oily, acne prone skin, you may actually be lacking the natural oils to hold in all of that moisture.
You might be thinking that adding a face oil to your routine is just an unnecessary extra step, but using one could actually simplify your skincare and give you better results. Besides giving you softer, smoother skin, face oils are usually packed with nutrients, fatty acids and antioxidants. They help repair your skin and even more, they help your skin absorb other products better, so your serums and moisturizers will work more effectively.
After using face oils for a few years now, my skin has never been better and my skincare routine has become much more consistent and relatively simple. The bulk of my routine is at night, where the oils and products have more time to sink in and do their job (I don’t like using oils during the day because they tend to break down my makeup). For a simple, effective routine, start with a clean, exfoliated face, then put on a serum targeted to your skin’s needs, followed by a few drops of a good quality face oil, eye cream, then a thick moisturizer or night cream. This is the best routine I have found and it is truly effective.
Below are some amazing oils I have tried out - let me know some of your favorites in the comments below!
This is hands down my favorite face oil. It is so antioxidant-rich from the sea buckthorn oil (shoutout to my family in Canada for making me eat a Seaberry once), and is intensely moisturizing- you only need 2-3 drops. Save this for the winter or use year-round for extra-dry skin.
Currently on my skincare roster, this is a very lightweight oil with a barely-there feel. This is technically a “sleeping peel” meant to resurface the skin with cranberry seed, sage and pomegranate oils, and is great for those who are acne-prone. I definitely recommend this for the summer months and first-time oil users!
One of the first oils I started using (thankfully with a nice work discount), this is an extremely luxurious and effective oil. I was honestly amazed when I tried a sample of this, and have been hooked on oils ever since! Blended with pure chamomile, sandalwood, sage and lavender essential oils, this helps calm the skin and the senses, and helps reduce redness and blotchiness.
