If you think slathering oils on your face will cause more harm than good, keep on reading. Best partnered with a good moisturizer that will sink deeper into your skin and provide more intense hydration, face oils are meant to sit on the top layer of the skin and act as a sealant to lock in moisture. While it might sound counterproductive if you already have oily, acne prone skin, you may actually be lacking the natural oils to hold in all of that moisture.
You might be thinking that adding a face oil to your routine is just an unnecessary extra step, but using one could actually simplify your skincare and give you better results. Besides giving you softer, smoother skin, face oils are usually packed with nutrients, fatty acids and antioxidants. They help repair your skin and even more, they help your skin absorb other products better, so your serums and moisturizers will work more effectively.
After using face oils for a few years now, my skin has never been better and my skincare routine has become much more consistent and relatively simple. The bulk of my routine is at night, where the oils and products have more time to sink in and do their job (I don’t like using oils during the day because they tend to break down my makeup). For a simple, effective routine, start with a clean, exfoliated face, then put on a serum targeted to your skin’s needs, followed by a few drops of a good quality face oil, eye cream, then a thick moisturizer or night cream. This is the best routine I have found and it is truly effective.
Below are some amazing oils I have tried out - let me know some of your favorites in the comments below!
This is hands down my favorite face oil. It is so antioxidant-rich from the sea buckthorn oil (shoutout to my family in Canada for making me eat a Seaberry once), and is intensely moisturizing- you only need 2-3 drops. Save this for the winter or use year-round for extra-dry skin.
Currently on my skincare roster, this is a very lightweight oil with a barely-there feel. This is technically a “sleeping peel” meant to resurface the skin with cranberry seed, sage and pomegranate oils, and is great for those who are acne-prone. I definitely recommend this for the summer months and first-time oil users!
One of the first oils I started using (thankfully with a nice work discount), this is an extremely luxurious and effective oil. I was honestly amazed when I tried a sample of this, and have been hooked on oils ever since! Blended with pure chamomile, sandalwood, sage and lavender essential oils, this helps calm the skin and the senses, and helps reduce redness and blotchiness.

When the weather begins to warm up and our foundation and mascara start to melt, there’s no better feeling than taking all (or most) of it off and rocking the bare-minimum makeup look. But besides the genetically blessed, most of us probably have a few problem areas on the skin that we don’t feel so confident showing off. If you’ve tried every trick in the book and the breakouts and redness still persist, you could be forgetting one thing- cleaning your dirty makeup brushes.
Don’t feel bad if you can’t remember the last time you washed your brushes or if you’ve never even given cleaning a thought. A survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of Anisa International, a global leader in the design and creation of unique beauty tools and solutions, found that over 60 percent of women clean their makeup brushes only once a month, or not at all. Ideally, you should be using your makeup brush cleaner at least one to two times a month, according to Anisa Telwar-Kaicker, founder and CEO of Anisa International.
Not quite convinced that cleaning is worth your time? Keep on reading for a few nasty effects of dirty brushes and how they could be holding you back from showing off your skin.
Unwashed brushes will build up bacteria and dust over time, creating a breeding ground for bacteria, especially if kept in a damp place like under your sink or near the shower. Wiping those grimy brushes all over your face can be a major factor in what causes acne.
If your brushes go unwashed, they’ll not only be covered in bacteria, but also oils and residue from your face. Those oils and dirt can create clogged pores and lead to even more breakouts.
Muddy Makeup Application
Aside from affecting your actual skin, dirty brushes and sponges will leave your makeup streaky and won’t apply the true color of your cosmetics. So that new pink blush you just bought will end up leaving your cheeks looking dirty, rather than rosy.
When taken care of properly, good quality brushes can help your makeup look completely natural and smooth. If you neglect your tools, the hairs can clump together, become coarse or fall out. This not only leads to poor makeup application, it’s a waste of money, because girl, brushes ain’t cheap.
How often do you wash your brushes, or are you guilty of leaving them dirty? Let me know in the comments below!

The key to preventing makeup meltdowns, setting sprays have become a vital last step in the makeup process. Intended to keep makeup in place, prevent smudges, refresh the skin and more, makeup setting sprays have come a long way from the OG Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray and MAC Fix + with the creation of so many new formulas and finishes. If you love highlighting (don’t we all?), the newest trend of illuminating setting sprays might just be your next secret weapon for glowing skin.
While many other products are made with a nozzle more similar to a heavy spray bottle, illuminators are designed to deliver a light, ultra-fine mist, leaving your skin with a natural-looking glow while locking in makeup all day or night. Unlike matte setting sprays that absorb oils and minimize shine, illuminating mists contain micro-shimmer particles to create a noticeably dewy sheen without looking glittery. Don’t be scared to try an illuminating spray if you have oily skin- the products are easily buildable, so start off with one light spray to secure everything in place and create a subtle glow.
If you’re looking for an extra boost of radiance, keep on reading for a few of the best-selling illuminating sprays in the market and let me know if you have tried any!
This illuminating spray contains subtle rose gold-colored micro pearls and creates a sparkle-free sheen for an airbrushed finish, flattering on all skin tones.
